The Clean is a New Zealand rock band formed in 1978 in Dunedin by drummer Hamish Kilgour, guitarist David Kilgour and bassist Peter Gutteridge († 2014). The band is one of the best known representatives of the Dunedin sound , a style within indie rock .

history

After trying to establish themselves in Auckland , the band returned to Dunedin and released the single Tally Ho! In 1981 . on Flying Nun Records , which reached number 19 on the charts. In the same year the EP Boodle Boodle Boodle followed , which came to number 4 on the charts. In 1982 they released the EP Great Sounds Great . After that, the band was shut down for the time being. In 1983 the Kilgour brothers released the album Clean Out of Our Minds under the name The Great Unwashed , which was more folky than the punk sound of The Clean . An EP followed in 1984, again with Peter Gutteridge. Then this band broke up too. The Clean were a typical representative of the Dunedin sound in the 1980s , which was published by the New Zealand label Flying Nun Records.

Between 1987 and 1989 Hamish Kilgour worked with the group Bailter Space . In 1988 the band members of The Clean got together again for two concerts in London and released a live album with the material recorded . After a tour, the album Vehicle followed in 1990, with more poppy tones than on previous releases. After a further breakup, they came back together in 1994 and recorded the albums Modern Rock (1995), Unknown Country (1996) and Getaway (2001). The live album Slush Found was also released in 2001 and a live album was also released in 2003 and 2008. In 2009 The Clean released the album Mister Pop .
