Bullet LaVolta was an American band active between 1986 and 1992 . Because of the melodious nature of their hardcore punk , hardcore crossover or just crossover is often used as a style designation .

history

At the end of 1986, Clay Tarver, Corey “Loog” Brennan and Bill Whelan broke away from the DJ staff of the Harvard Campus broadcaster WHRB to start a band as guitarists and bassists, respectively. As a drummer they first found Chris "Cougar" Guttmacher. Kurt Davis from Indiana joined them later , who took over the vocals and called himself "Yukki Gipe" from then on. The band name was taken from a suggestion list by Beatnik author Marianne Moore , which the Ford Motor Company had asked for in 1955 to name their latest models. In College -Shows renowned artists such as Henry Rollins ( Rollins Band ) is served as the opening act on before the jump succeeded the music business.

In 1988 the band released their first EP "Bullet LaVolta" on Taang! Records , which was released in Germany under the title Dead Wrong around November 1988 on Funhouse Records . Brennan was still responsible for the guitar work on the three songs on the A side, while the three songs on the B side were recorded by the new guitarist Kenny Chambers. Their first LP The Gift was released again in 1989 by Taang !. This was followed by a US tour with Soundgarden in late 1989 . In 1990 the next EP Gimme Danger was released by Metal Blade Records , which contains two studio recordings and three live pieces, including a cover version of Detroit Rock City , which had been recorded with Todd Philips, who had since taken over the drums.

Due to risk of downtime, the band moved in the same year by the indie care to the major label RCA Records , which the rights for the re-release of Bullet Lavolta and The Gift acquired, which then together on a CD was reissued. On November 24, 1990 she took part in the WDR Rocknacht 7 . Before the studio stay in March / April 1991, Kenny Chambers, who had co-written three songs, got out because he returned to his previous band Moving Targets. Duke Roth was accepted as a new addition to the band. Dave Jerden ( Anthrax , Social Distortion , Jane's Addiction , Alice in Chains ) produced the next album Swandive , which was released in the USA in September 1991 on RCA and in Germany in May 1992 on Glitterhouse / Sub Pop .

In 1991, Matador Records released a compilation of live recordings from 1987 called The Gun Didn't Know I Was Loaded . A US tour followed in November / December 1991 with Corrosion of Conformity and Prong , which was followed by a club tour in Germany in May / June 1992. At the end of 1992 the band broke up.

style

Mark Day introduced in Metal Hammer found that the typical Bullet Lavolta style from the hardcore out had been developed and punk - and metal - riffs with melodies and rock leg holding structures.

In relation to the newcomer, Andrea Nieradzik spoke in Metal Hammer and Peter Weiß in Break Out of Hardcore. Hardcore crossover was what John Duke called the style, again in Metal Hammer . Andrea Nieradzik changed the description to Metal-Core because the heavy metal part had increased on The Gift . The Musikexpress editorial team used the term guitar core . The Iron Pages means the same thing with the term Power-Rock-Core. Doris Busch from EB / Metronom decided on the crossover category. The band itself spoke of punk, which was linked to rock of the 1970s.
