Corrosion of Conformity are a music group from North Carolina , which over the years and due to several changes in the line-up have integrated a wide variety of influences into their music, thus covering a range from hardcore punk to metal and stoner to southern rock .

The band became known in their early days for their aggressive sound paired with intelligent political lyrics. Corrosion of Conformity later reached wide audiences with their more developed, more relaxed musical style.

history

Corrosion of Conformity was founded in the early 1980s by the then 15-year-old guitarist Woody Weatherman. He belonged to the minority of those musicians who did not see metal and punk as opposing musical trends, but made efforts to bring them down to a common denominator.

The hardcore- heavy debut Eye for an Eye was released in 1983 and showed the band on the right track to achieve their self-declared goal of becoming the "fastest band in America". The album brings back memories of Black Flag in part and was financed by income from donating blood and having the long hair cut. At this point Mike Dean (bass), Reed Mullin (drums) and singer Eric Eycke completed the band.

The vocals were already taken over by bassist Mike Dean in 1985 on the second album Animosity , which shows the first serious attempts at a fusion of Thrash Metal and Punk .

The band carousel continued to spin until the EP Technocracy (1987) was released, on which Simon Bob Sinister of the Ugly Americans can be heard as the singer. After a temporary resolution Corrosion of Conformitys, it continues chaotically: Pepper Keenan (Ex- Graveyard Rodeo ) was with us as the second guitarist, Phil Swisher now on bass and Karl Agell took over the position on the microphone.

Due to the member changes, the following album Blind was delayed several times and was only released in 1991. In the sound of the band there are clear influences from hardcore and with the Vote with a Bullet sung by Keenan , Corrosion of Conformity recorded a real hit, which is now a classic applies.

A lucrative record deal with Sony / Columbia and repeated appearances as part of the MTV series Beavis and Butthead led to greater awareness, especially in the US. Nevertheless, the line-up did not remain stable and singer Agell was fired during the recordings for the next release, and Swisher then also left the musician collective.

After the rest of the band was looking for more peace and quiet, it was decided to persuade former bassist Mike Dean to return and give Keenan the role of the singing frontman.

Keenan has become the front man and mouthpiece of the band over the years

The Deliverance that followed in 1994 , which only narrowly missed gold status, was more earthy and rockier overall and featured the groovy and melodic Clean My Wounds, the most successful song in the band's history to date. Corrosion of Conformity went on tour with weighty bands like Megadeth and Monster Magnet .

A year later, Keenan took a short break to record the acclaimed album Nola with the all-star project Down (with members of Pantera , Crowbar and Eyehategod, among others ) .

In 1996, Corrosion of Conformity's next work, the bulky Wiseblood , was released, which received great attention worldwide through many appearances in the USA and Europe as the opening act for Metallica . On their album Garage Inc. Keenan took part in the song Tuesday's Gone . A Grammy nomination for Drowning in a Daydream followed, and the headlining tour with Machine Head was successful.

The band was still dissatisfied with their contract partner Columbia , which concentrated more on the pop market. The contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

After a long break appeared in 2000 on the label Sanctuary Records with America's Volume Dealer a very melodic and catchy album that somewhere in the orbit of heavy rock and blues rock is to be settled. Both acoustic guitars and a piano can be found on the publication.

Mullin could not play the upcoming tour due to a back injury that had never completely healed. Jimmy Bower from Down took over the seat behind the drums and can therefore also be heard on the live volume CD and DVD.

In 2002, Keenan, who had been the band's mouthpiece for a long time, was again busy with the Down project and recorded Nola's successor II before he was about to join Metallica as the new bass player. After being defeated by Robert Trujillo in the final auditions, however , he concentrated again on his main band, in which Stanton Moore temporarily took over the drums.

The result was In the Arms of God , released in 2005 , which is much rougher again and has clear cross-references to traditional metal bands such as Black Sabbath or Mercyful Fate . Extensive tours with Motörhead and Crowbar follow, and a European tour with Black Label Society has been considered.

engagement

Over the years, Corrosion of Conformity has repeatedly come into the limelight with clear political statements against nationalism and right- wing conservatism and have been involved with Greenpeace , Amnesty International and PETA , among others .

Shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001 , they support a pro- democratic women's movement in Afghanistan . Nevertheless, the band rejects any attempts to capture it as a mainly political band.
