Sanctuary Records is a British record label specializing in metal . It has been part of the Universal Music Group since June 2007, and before that it was the UK's largest independent label.

In 2013, Sanctuary was taken over by BMG Rights Management for 50 million euros .

history

The label was founded in 1979 by Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, who discovered Iron Maiden in a London pub and signed it. This contract marks the founding of the label, whose name is derived from the Iron Maiden song Sanctuary . With Iron Maiden, the label also gained fame and was able to put young, hopeful, but also older bands under contract for a long time, including Europe and Uriah Heep . Since most of the bands made their breakthrough during their time with the label, it quickly became a popular label for metal bands. In June 2007 the label was sold to Universal Music Group for £ 44.5 million.
