Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic metal - band in 1996 by Sharon den Adel was founded and Robert Westerholt. With over three million records sold worldwide, the band is one of the most successful Dutch groups.

history

Less than two months after the band was founded , Within Temptation signed a contract with DSFA Records and their debut album Enter was released in April of the following year . In November 1997 they went on a two-week tour through Germany and Austria . In 1998 an EP called The Dance came out.

After a year off, Within Temptation recorded a new album in 2000 called Mother Earth . This became a first major success and the band played at several festivals and concerts. Three singles followed: Mother Earth , Our Farewell and Ice Queen .

The international breakthrough came in 2002: The single Ice Queen reached number one in the Netherlands and Belgium , the album Mother Earth sold more than 750,000 times in Europe and reached triple platinum in the Netherlands and gold in Belgium. The band played at important German festivals ( Rock am Ring , Bizarre Festival , Summer Breeze ) and Benelux festivals ( Ozzfest , Lowlands , Dynamo ). Previously, the single Mother Earth had increased awareness in Germany. Mother Earth is the title song of the German version of the Japanese anime X .

Their third album The Silent Force was released on November 15, 2004. The single Stand My Ground was played on the radio several times and the album itself went platinum in the Netherlands and gold in Belgium within the first two months of its release.

Two more singles and a European tour (with a small detour to Dubai ) followed. The festival visits were also maintained. In summer the band performed at the Wacken Open Air in Wacken . The tour ended on July 22nd with a big concert on the Amsterdam harbor island Java Island in front of 10,000 fans, which was released on DVD on November 18th, 2005 . In June 2006, Within Temptation had to end their appearance at the Hurricane Festival prematurely after 45 minutes due to a heavy storm. Despite Sharon den Adel's warning “There's a storm coming up” shortly after the concert began , only a few festival-goers had left the site. In the same month they also played at the Southside Festival .

On November 30, 2006, Within Temptation released together with the game developers of The Chronicles of Spellborn a trailer that shows excerpts from the game and is underlaid with the song The Howling , which can be found on the album The Heart of Everything .

On February 16, 2007, the single What Have You Done was released , in which the band was supported by Mina Caputo (then Keith Caputo). Her fourth album The Heart of Everything followed on March 9, 2007. On June 22, another single was released with the title Frozen , the proceeds of which were donated to the international children's charity "Child Helpline International".

Within Temptation won the award in the Best Dutch and Belgian Act category at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007 in Munich on November 1st, 2007 . The band was also nominated for the Echo 2008 in the Rock / Alternative category, but did not win it.

In 2008 a double DVD with the title Black Symphony was released . The DVD contains a recording of the “ Ahoy Rotterdam ” concert from February 7th, 2008. The concert was a collaboration between Within Temptation and the “ Metropole Orchestra ”.

In March and April 2010 Within Temptation toured again through the Benelux countries and appeared in various theaters. After performing in Antwerp on April 29, Stephen left the group to join his own band and spend more time with his family.

On March 25, 2011, the studio album The Unforgiving was released . Afterwards there was originally supposed to be a European tour from February to April, this had to be postponed to September to November due to Sharon's third pregnancy. On December 15, 2010, the promotion of the album The Unforgiving began with the publication of a first song ( Where Is the Edge ) on the official Within Temptation channel on YouTube . Another song ( Faster ) and two short films for the new album followed later . On March 11, 2011, the track Faster, already published online, was released as a single.

With the beginning of the Unforgiving world tour, the band announced that Robert Westerholt was withdrawing from his role as a tour musician in order to look after Sharons and his three children and to develop more time for new ideas about the music and the shows. He was replaced by Stefan Helleblad, who had been working with the band for a long time, u. a. as a sound engineer.

On November 13th, 2012 they played a big show, called Elements , at the Sportpaleis, Antwerp, to mark their 15th anniversary .

The band members have been writing their new album since 2012. The album was supposed to be released in September 2013. The band has also released an album of cover songs called The Q-Music Sessions , which includes 11 of the 15 cover songs the band recorded for the Belgian radio station Q-Music. These cover songs are well-known hits that were played within Temptation style.

On August 30, 2013 the band announced that the song Paradise (What about Us?) - a duet with Tarja Turunen - would be released as an EP with four songs, with the other three tracks being demo versions of songs from the announced new album be. The EP was released on September 21st. The new album Hydra was finally released on January 22nd, 2014, among others in collaboration with Xzibit .

After a break by the singer Sharon den Adel, the band announced a new tour for the end of 2018 on the official website on November 20, 2017. Concerts are planned in 33 cities in 18 countries. In 2019 the band performed at the Wacken Open Air .

style

Enter and The Dance can be assigned to Gothic Metal. For example, the guitarist Robert Westerholt contributed to some of Grunt's songs , which was no longer the case in the following songs. The album The Silent Force, on the other hand, relies on symphonic metal with a large orchestra . The album Mother Earth lies between these two styles. The very high pitch of the voice is particularly characteristic of Sharon den Adel's singing. With the album The Unforgiving , released in 2011, typical Power Metal elements, such as the typical guitar solos and fast guitar riffs, were added.
