Mother Earth ( English for "Mother Earth") is the second album by the Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation . It was released on May 7, 2001.

In January 2003 the album was re-released in Germany and neighboring German countries with a slightly different track list and a new cover, and in September 2004 also in Great Britain.

Music genre

Mother Earth differs significantly from its predecessor Enter and the subsequent album The Silent Force . The singer Sharon den Adel sings almost exclusively , the guitarist Robert Westerholt can only be heard in two songs. Overall, the band is moving away from growling and moving more towards rock . Important elements here are the guitars and the use of drums. The singer's high-pitched voice is also typical of this album.

Meaning of the lyrics

The mostly mystical texts deal with evil and darkness, which one should not simply indulge in, but which one must fight against. The nature is also given a not insignificant importance: Mother Earth is about mother nature. This is described as stronger than humans. Ice Queen is about the destructive power of winter. In Perfect Harmony the story of a boy is told who grows up in nature and lives in harmony with it.

Other focal points include jealousy and death.

Single releases

The first single from the album was Our Farewell on January 22, 2001. This was followed by Ice Queen on May 12, 2003 and Mother Earth on October 13, 2003 ( Ice Queen and Mother Earth were released in the Netherlands on June 28, 2001 and June 8, respectively Published May 2002).

Above all, the single Ice Queen helped the band to become well known and successful. In the Netherlands it reached number two in the charts.

Video album

The new release in 2003 was followed by the double DVD Mother Earth Tour that same year . In addition to the CD titles, it contains three music videos (“Mother Earth”, “Ice Queen” and “The Dance”) as well as numerous live recordings of concerts and interviews, making-ofs and other backstage material.
