The Unforgiving is the fifth album by the Dutch band Within Temptation . It was released in March 2011 by Roadrunner Records .

Origin and style

In contrast to its predecessor The Heart of Everything , The Unforgiving should be designed a little more modern. A comic-like overall concept was selected for this - also for the texts. The music style doesn't differ much from the previous albums, but the vocals are a bit rougher. Most of the songs have catchy hooklines and some of them, like the first single Faster, show elements of hard rock and pop . The production, which was taken over by Daniel Gibson again, as on the two previous albums , was described as "high end". Short films and a comic book were released for the individual songs.

reception

The album reached number seven in the German charts and, at number 50, was also able to place a little higher on the Billboard 200 in the USA for the first time . Michael Rensen wrote in Rock Hard : “The minimally scared comic-text concept and the powerfully oppressive and contemporary trimmed, cinematic high-end production lead to an overhead kick, which, however, turns out to be a straightforward flat pass when more detailed . ”He called Shot in the Dark a“ high-flyer song ”and awarded 7.5 out of ten points. Greg Prato from the Allmusic.com website emphasized the good songwriting . The attempt to bring out a concept album that was not depressed by its storyline was also successful. He awarded 3.5 out of five stars.
