Hookline
A hook ( engl. Hook =, hooks 'and line =, line') is a piece of music characteristic catchy melodic phrase or line of text that the recognition makes for the track, so to speak in the memory "stuck" and can be easily reproduced from it can. The catchy tune effect of a piece of music is usually determined by its hookline. In rap music, the term hook is a direct synonym for refrain .
General
The success of a piece of music is largely determined by its recognition value, because this is a demand factor in the music industry . Professional composers try specifically to place catchy text and / or music elements and passages in their compositions. These so-called hooks are supposed to increase the recognition value and ultimately the success of a song. Arnold Shaw assumes that almost every hit contains a hookline that captivates the listener in such a way that the piece of music "winds" into the listener's memory (he uses "worms into one's memory"; derived from earworm for catchy tune ). For music researcher Jan Hemming, "repeated simple melodic or harmonic structures are possibly necessary, but not sufficient conditions for a phrase to become a catchy tune."
responsiveness
According to Hemming, catchy hooks with catchy hooks occur more than 70 percent in routine everyday situations such as washing up and tidying up or in idle and waiting phases, i.e. more in situations of underload. In contrast, they rarely arise when the person concerned is mentally or emotionally very tense. Hemming assumes that catchy tunes arise as a reaction to idle phases in our brain. The brain may also react to the simple absence of music.
A hookline can also be created by a memorable chord progression , a short instrumental motif or even certain sounds. The most important thing here is the highest possible repetition rate in the course of the song. Commercially successful productions often have several hooklines.
The hookline usually carries the musical conciseness and lyrically the main message of the song and creates or enhances the recognition value. It is usually a chorus line or the key word of the chorus: Above the clouds , Love Me Tender , Greek wine - or sometimes the music title : In the Ghetto , But with cream , please .
