But please with cream is a song of the Austrian singer Udo Jürgens from the year 1976. It was composed of Jürgens on a Blüthner - wing , which he called Gage for his appearances in the GDR had received. The lyrics are from Eckart Hachfeld and Wolfgang Spahr. The song has been covered repeatedly .

Content and background

The song is about Mathilde, Ottilie, Marie and Liliane, a group of older women who meet regularly in the pastry shop and blow "... to storm the cake buffet ...". "But please with cream" is the end line of each stanza. In the first two stanzas, the coffee parties and the delicacies that are consumed are described. In the third, it is described that the women, apart from Liliane, die one after the other - the song suggests, ultimately from being overweight - but there are also numerous cakes for funerals. In the last stanza Liliane dies, too, who falls from her chair, and the pastor buries her with the words "... that the Lord God paves the way for her to heaven" - whereupon the stanza closes again with "but please with cream". Finally, in a small post-verse, the question is asked whether it should be a biscuit after all.

Because of the text, Udo Jürgens doubted whether his female fans would like the piece; Because of the last stanza, Jürgens was accused of blasphemy at the time and the song was not played by some radio stations.

The song was released on June 21, 1976 by Ariola in Germany as a single; it is 3:35 minutes long. The title also appeared on several “best-of” editions by Udo Jürgens.
