Ozzfest
The Ozzfest is an annual music festival tour, in which many artists from the metal - and hard rock occur scene. It was founded in 1996 by Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon Osbourne , who have also taken over the organization since then. Until 2010, the Ozzfest toured every year through the USA and occasionally through Canada and Europe ; since then it has been carried out sporadically in Japan . The styles represented at Ozzfest are diverse, including alternative metal , thrash metal , industrial rock , metalcore , hardcore punk , deathcore , nu metal , death metal , post-hardcore , gothic metal, and black metal . At almost all concerts, the namesake Ozzy Osbourne performed either solo or as part of his band Black Sabbath .
history
Sharon Osbourne came up with the idea for Ozzfest after the organizers of the Lollapalooza Festival refused to let her husband Ozzy Osbourne perform. The first Ozzfest in September 1996 included two events in Phoenix ( Arizona ) and Devore ( California ). A little later the live album The Ozzfest was released. In the second year the tour included eleven concerts; In addition to artists such as Pantera and Marilyn Manson , Black Sabbath also appeared in the cast of Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi ; Mike Bordin of Faith No More helped out as a drummer. The 1997 Ozzfest was the second most successful tour of the year in the USA, only surpassed by Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair . Another sampler was released in November 1997, The Ozzman Cometh .
1998 Ozzfest made first station in Osbourne's home Great Britain , than the tour in the Milton Keynes Bowl of Milton Keynes was opened (compared to the greatly expanded American part with a changed line-up). Korn had also been scheduled for the tour, but withdrew their participation because of the birth of guitarist Brian Welch's daughter . The concert in Somerset ( Wisconsin ) was combined with the Warped Tour . In 2001 the tour began again in Great Britain at the Milton Keynes Bowl. In 2002 it initially led through eight European countries, with two concerts taking place in Germany . The tour kick-off on May 17, 2002 in Nuremberg was integrated into the Rock im Park festival . The death of Dave Williams , the singer of Drowning Pool , overshadowed the 2002 Ozzfest tour. Live albums were released in both 2001 and 2002.
From 2003 the Ozzfest was again exclusively in North America. In 2004 Judas Priest played reunited at the Ozzfest. In addition, a newcomer band was sought as part of the television show Battle for Ozzfest ; the winners A Dozen Furies got a place in the line-up of the following year's tour. Iron Maiden only appeared on part of the tour in 2005. At their last concert as part of the tour in San Bernardino , the band was pelted with eggs from the audience. Singer Bruce Dickinson was also insulted after Sharon Osbourne's appearance . According to a message on the official website of the tour, there had been differences between the organizers and Iron Maiden beforehand. Among other things, Dickinson had criticized the reality TV show The Osbournes , which shows the everyday life of Ozzy Osbourne's family. The gap created by Iron Maiden's scheduling problems was then filled as planned by Velvet Revolver . In 2006 Ozzy Osbourne only headlined ten out of 21 concerts .
Ozzfest 2007 tickets were available free of charge from various websites. Various sponsors took over the costs of the event and the bands had to perform without a fee. Josh Homme , the front man of Queens of the Stone Age , criticized this approach. In his opinion, it was not a good deed for the fans, but an Osbournes PR campaign. In addition, the bands were treated badly. During the Ozzfest 2007 two visitors died in Holmdel after taking a drug cocktail. During the subsequent police investigation, 83 people were arrested. The organizer then laid down new rules for dealing with alcohol on the festival site. In 2008 there were only a single Ozzfest concert in Frisco ( Texas ). There Ozzy Osbourne headlined again with Black Sabbath. The cards were again given free of charge.
In 2009 the Ozzfest was canceled because Ozzy Osbourne wanted to concentrate on the production of his new album. It took place again a year later. As part of the Ozzfest 2010 there were also two performances outside the United States: on September 18th in the O2 Arena in London and on September 28th in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). The line-ups were different from the dates in the USA. In 2011 there was again no Ozzfest. Osbourne justified this with his recently completed US tour and the subsequent European tour in the summer. The Ozzfest was also canceled in 2012. In 2013 it included two concerts in the Japanese city of Chiba .
Appearances
In 2011 there were two stages at Ozzfest (with the exception of 2008, where there were three stages): the more well-known artists and bands performed on the first stage, while the newer and still little-known artists and bands performed on the second. Sometimes bands that belong on the first stage were rotated on the second stage.
