Baytown is a city in Harris County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America ; it belongs to the Houston metropolitan area .

geography

The city is located about 20 km north of the east-west running US Highway 10 in southeast Texas, is about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of ​​85.9 km², of which 1.3 km² is water. The distance to Houston to the west is approximately 45 km.

Settlement in what is now Baytown began around 1822. One of the first settlers was Nathaniel Lynch , who built bayou at the confluence of the San Jacinto Rivers and Buffalo . The ferry connection still exists today in a modernized form and is known as Lynchburg Ferry .

The city experienced an economic boom in 1916 when the first oil discoveries were made. The Humble Oil & Refining Company , founded by Ross S. Sterling , built a refinery that was then one of the largest in the world. Exxon Mobil later became the main petroleum company with 10 processing plants in the area. In 1970 United States Steel opened a large steel mill near the city, but it was closed again in 1986.

According to the census in 2000 , 66,430 people lived here; 23,483 households and 17,025 families were counted. The population density was 786 inhabitants per km². With the Baytown Refinery , one of the largest oil refineries in the USA is located in Baytown.
