Baytown is a city in Harris County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America ; it belongs to the Houston metropolitan area .
geography
The city is located about 20 km north of the east-west running US Highway 10 in southeast Texas, is about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 85.9 km², of which 1.3 km² is water. The distance to Houston to the west is approximately 45 km.

Settlement in what is now Baytown began around 1822. One of the first settlers was Nathaniel Lynch , who built bayou at the confluence of the San Jacinto Rivers and Buffalo . The ferry connection still exists today in a modernized form and is known as Lynchburg Ferry .
The city experienced an economic boom in 1916 when the first oil discoveries were made. The Humble Oil & Refining Company , founded by Ross S. Sterling , built a refinery that was then one of the largest in the world. Exxon Mobil later became the main petroleum company with 10 processing plants in the area. In 1970 United States Steel opened a large steel mill near the city, but it was closed again in 1986.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 , 66,430 people lived here; 23,483 households and 17,025 families were counted. The population density was 786 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is composed of 67.87% White, 13.38% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 14.42% other ethnic groups; 2.77% were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 34.24% of the population.
Of the 23,483 households, 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.9% of these were married couples living together. 14.2% were single mothers and 27.5% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were single households and 8.0% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.32 people.
30.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 11.2% 18 to 24, 29.4% 25 to 44, 19.5% 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 94.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,559 USD , and the median income for a family 45,346 USD. Males had a median income of $ 38,039 versus $ 25,012 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,641. 15.5% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.9% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.8% were 65 or older.

With the Baytown Refinery , one of the largest oil refineries in the USA is located in Baytown. The capacity is 584,000 barrels per day - this corresponds to over 92.8 million liters of crude oil daily. The refinery opened in 1919 during the then oil boom in Texas. Due to the constant increase in the population in Texas, the capacity of the refinery was expanded over time. Most recently because of the current shale oil boom in the USA, which is mainly taking place in Texas and North Dakota. The refinery is the city's largest employer. Of the 84.6 km² of land in Baytown, the refinery claims 9.7 km². Baytown is also the location of a Covestro plant .

The crime rate is 322.9 index points; the US national average is 329.7 points. In 2003 there were 5 murders, 31 rapes, 75 robberies, 153 physical attacks on people, 590 break-ins, 2103 thefts and 232 car thefts.
