The Chambers County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Anahuac .

geography

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and belongs to the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area . It has an area of ​​2258 square kilometers, of which 706 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Liberty County , Jefferson County , Galveston County, and Harris County .

history

Chambers County was formed on February 12, 1858 from parts of Jefferson County and Liberty County and the administrative organization was completed on August 2 of the same year. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Chambers (1802-1865), a Surveyor General and lawyer in Mexico and Texas and a general in the Army of the Republic of Texas . During the Civil War , he served as a volunteer under Southern General John Bell Hood .

Chambersea is one of six entries for the county in the NRHP.

As of the 2000 census , Chambers County had 26,031 people; 9,139 households and 7,219 families were counted. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.88 percent white, 9.77 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian and 6.02 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 10.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,139 households, 40.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 65.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 21.0 percent were non-families. 17.8 percent were single households and 6.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.20 people.

28.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 years or older there were 99.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 47,964 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,986. Males had a median income of $ 43,351 versus $ 25,478 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,863. 8.3 percent of families and 11.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
