The Walker County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . In 2000, the county had 61,758 residents and a population density of 30 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Huntsville .

The county is in east Texas, about 130 km from the Louisiana border and about 120 km to the southwest from the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 2076 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Houston County , Trinity County , San Jacinto County , Montgomery County , Grimes County, and Madison County .

history

Walker County was formed in 1846 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Samuel Hamilton Walker , a Texas ranger and soldier in the Mexican-American War .

The racial the population was composed of 69.12 percent white, 23.88 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.77 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 18,303 households, 28.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 46.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, and 37.8 percent were non-families. 27.0 percent were single households and 8.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 151.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 161.9 males. The well above-average proportion of men in the population is due to the role of Huntsville as the headquarters of the Texas prison system (of the county's approximately 50,000 inhabitants in 1990, about 10,000 were prison inmates).

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,468 , and the median income for a family was $ 42,589. Males had a median income of $ 27,634 versus $ 22,579 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,508. 10.6 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
