The Dimmit County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Carrizo Springs .

The county is located south of the geographic center of Texas and borders Mexico at its southwestern tip . It has an area of ​​3456 km², of which 9 km² are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Zavala County , La Salle County , Webb County, and Maverick County .

history

Dimmit County was formed on February 1, 1858 from parts of Bexar County , Maverick County, Uvalde County, and Webb County. The administrative organization was completed on November 2, 1880. It was named after Philip Dimmitt , an officer during the Texan Revolution . Dimmit committed suicide in 1841 to avoid incarceration in a Mexican prison.

According to the 2000 census , Dimmit County had 10,248 people in 3,308 households and 2,646 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.95 percent white, 0.88 percent African American, 0.70 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 18.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.51 percent were descended from two or more races. 84.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 21,917 , and the median income for a family is $ 24,579. Males had a median income of $ 25,000 versus $ 15,370 for women. The per capita income was 9,765. 33.2 percent of the population and 29.7 percent of families lived below the poverty line.
