The Rains County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is in Emory .

geography

The county is located in northeast Texas, about 70 km to the north from Oklahoma and has an area of ​​670 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hopkins County , Wood County , Van Zandt County, and Hunt County .

history

Rains County was formed in 1870 from parts of Hopkins County, Hunt County, and Wood County. It was named after Emory Rains , an early lawyer of the later county.

As of the 2000 census , Rains County had 9,139 people in 3,617 households and 2,680 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.91 percent white, 2.92 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,712 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,329. Males had a median income of $ 31,983 versus $ 21,594 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,442. 11.4 percent of families and 14.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
