The Donley County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Clarendon .

geography

The county is located north-northwest of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle and is approximately 130 km to the north and approximately 50 km to the east from the state of Oklahoma . To the west it is about 150 km to New Mexico . Donley County has an area of ​​2,417 km², of which 8 km² is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Gray County , Collingsworth County , Hall County , Briscoe County, and Armstrong County .

history

Donley County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on March 22, 1882. It was named after the District Attorney Stockton P. Donley , one of the first lawyers in Texas. He was a judge on the Supreme Court of Texas until 1867 , but was dismissed during the Reconstruction .

Donley County had a population of 3,828 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 203 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1578 households and 1057 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.4 percent white, 3.9 percent African American, 0.9 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 2.7 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were from two or more races. 6.4 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,578 households, 24.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers and 33.0 percent were non-families. 31.4 percent were single households and 17.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

22.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24, 20.6 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,006 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,287. Males had a median income of $ 24,375 versus $ 18,882 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,958. 10.5 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
