The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 140 km off the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​2,771 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Fayette County , Lavaca County , DeWitt County , Karnes County , Wilson County , Guadalupe County, and Caldwell County .

history

Gonzales County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after the city of Gonzales , which bears the name of Rafael Gonzalez (1789-1857). He was an officer in the Spanish army and in 1824 governor of the Mexican provinces of Texas and Coahuila .

As of the 2000 census , Gonzales County had 18,628 people in 6,782 households and 4,876 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.25 percent white, 8.39 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 16.48 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.01 percent were descended from two or more races. 39.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 95 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,368 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,218. Males had a median income of $ 23,439 versus $ 17,027 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,269. 13.8 percent of families and 18.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
