history
Between 1934 and 1936, individuals and the City of Gonzales donated land to the state park . The Civilian Conservation Corps built paths and the rustic stone buildings in the park area. In 1936, the 109 hectare park was opened at an altitude of 89 m. It was named after the tropical dwarf palmetto , the dwarf palmetto palm ( Sabal minor ), which is often found in this area.
Flora and fauna
The distribution areas of southwest and eastern species overlap and lead to a high biodiversity with 500 plant and 240 bird species. White-tailed deer , nine-banded armadillos , fox squirrels and raccoons can be found as well as the Caribbean caracara , lemon warbler , yellow-bellied sap-liner , grebes and red-shouldered buzzards . The spotted catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ), the largemouth bass and the red-cheeked slider turtle live by and in the water .
Infrastructure
Access to the recreation area is via a turn off US Highway 183 . The San Marcos River crosses Palmetto State Park, and paddle boats can be launched for boat tours and river walks in Luling City Park 20 kilometers upstream. In the park area there is the small Oxbow Lake for anglers and pedal boats, two campsites, hiking trails and nature trails such as the Lake Trail, the Palmetto Trail or the River Trail. On the Palmetto Trail there is a wooden water tower that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in order to always be able to adequately moisten the marshy areas of the park.
