Gonzales is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Gonzales County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the confluence of the Guadelupe River with the San Marcos River and the US Highways 90 , 97 and 183 north of the county center in southeastern Texas. The distance to the Gulf of Mexico is 165 km. Gonzales has a total area of 13.2 km² without any significant water surface.
history
Gonzales was founded in 1825 and is one of the first African American settlements in Texas. Gonzales was the first settlement of its kind west of the Colorado River . The place was named after Rafael Gonzales , governor of Coahuila and Texas. In July 1826 the place was destroyed in two Indian attacks and rebuilt in 1827. After the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, the area fell to the Republic of Texas , which in 1837 formed Gonzales County. The first post office opened in 1839.
In 1860, when the American Civil War broke out, the city had 1,703 inhabitants. Many local men of military age entered the service of the Army of the Confederate States of America .

According to the 2000 census, 7,202 people lived here in 2,571 households and 1,763 families. The population density was 545.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 62.95% White, 12.40% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 21.15% other ethnic groups. About 2.17% were mixed race and 46.13% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,571 households, 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.0% of these were married couples living together. 15.7% were single mothers and 31.4% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.35 people.
29.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6% 18 to 24, 24.9% 25 to 44, 18.7% 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 91.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 86.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 27,226 USD , and the median income for a family 34,663 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,804 versus $ 18,217 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,866. 20.9% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 25.5% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 23.0% were 65 or older.
