The Grimes County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Anderson .
geography
The county is east of the geographic center of Texas halfway to Louisiana and has an area of 2075 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Walker County , Montgomery County , Waller County , Washington County, and Brazos County .
history
Grimes County was formed on April 6, 1846 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Jesse Grimes (1788-1866), a signer of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and a member of the State Legislature .

According to the 2000 census , Grimes County had 23,552 people in 7,753 households and 5,628 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.79 percent white, 19.96 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.93 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 16.08 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,753 households, 34.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.4 percent were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers and 27.4 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.18 people.
24.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 117.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 124 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,280 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,008. Males had a median income of $ 30,138 versus $ 21,747 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,368. 13.8 percent of families and 16.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
