The Kenedy County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States and is based on the population, the fourth smallest county in the United States and geographically the third smallest in Texas. The county seat is in Sarita .

The county is located in southeast Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​5039 square kilometers, of which 1266 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kleberg County , Willacy County , Hidalgo County, and Brooks County .

history

Kenedy County was formed on April 2, 1921 from parts of Hidalgo County and Willacy County. It was named after Mifflin Kenedy (1818–1895), a steamship captain, shipping entrepreneur and part owner of the King Ranch .

Two places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of March 11, 2020), the King Ranch, which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark , and the Mansfield Cut Underwater Archeological District .

According to the 2000 census , Kenedy County had 414 people in 138 households and 110 families. The population density was 0.11 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.49 percent white, 0.72 percent African American, 0.72 percent Native American, 0.48 percent Asian and 31.88 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 78.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 138 households, 35.5 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.9 percent were single mothers and 19.6 percent were non-families. 18.8 percent were single households and 6.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.26 people.

29.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 110.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 100.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $ 25,000 , and the median income for a family was $ 26,719. Males had a median income of $ 18,125 versus $ 12,188 for females. The per capita income was 17,959. 15.3 percent of the population 9.9 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
