history
Martin County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on November 14, 1888. It was named after Wyly Martin (1776–1842), a major in the Army of the Republic of Texas . After a dispute with Sam Houston , he left the armed forces and became a member of the State Legislature in 1836 .
The settlement was mainly driven by the Texas and Pacific Railway , which sold plots of land to farmers from 1881 to develop the land. The farms mainly grew grain, cotton, vegetables and wine. While sheep farming still predominated in cattle breeding around 1890, it increasingly lost its importance in favor of cattle breeding, so the number of cattle increased tenfold from just over 3,000 in 1890 to 32,000 in 1900.
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 17, 2020, the Carmelite Monastery .
