The Travis County is a county in the US state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Austin , which is also the capital of Texas.

The county is located about 150 km southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2,647 square kilometers, of which 85 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Williamson County , Bastrop County , Caldwell County , Hays County , Blanco County, and Burnet County .
history
Travis County was formed in 1840 from parts of Bastrop County. It was named after William Barret Travis , a commander and defender of the Alamo .

According to the 2000 census , Travis County had 812,280 people in 320,766 households and 183,798 families. The population density was 317 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.21 percent white, 9.26 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 4.47 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 14.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 28.20 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 320,766 households, 29.3 percent had children or young people living with them. 42.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers and 42.7 percent were non-families. 30.1 percent were single households and 4.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.15 people.
23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.7 percent between 18 and 24, 36.5 percent between 25 and 44, 18.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 6.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 104.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 104.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,761 , and the median income for a family is $ 58,555. Males had a median income of $ 37,242 versus $ 30,452 for females. The per capita income was $ 25,883. 7.7 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
