The Runnels County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Ballinger .
geography
The county is located about 25 miles northwest of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,738 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Taylor County , Coleman County , Concho County , Tom Green County , Coke County, and Nolan County .
history
Runnels County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bexar County and Travis County . It was named after Hiram George Runnels , the 9th governor of Mississippi .

As of the 2000 census , Runnels County had 11,495 people in 4,428 households and 3,157 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.44 percent white, 1.40 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 14.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 29.33 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,428 households, 31.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers and 28.7 percent were non-families. 26.7 percent were single households and 15.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.06 people.
26.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 87.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,806 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,917. Males had a median income of $ 25,223 versus $ 18,988 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,577. 14.9 percent of families and 19.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
