The Williamson County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Georgetown .

geography

The county is located approximately 100 km east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2,939 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bell County , Milam County , Lee County , Bastrop County , Travis County, and Burnet County .

history

Williamson County was formed in 1848 from parts of Milam County. It was named after Robert McAlpin Williamson , a leader and veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto .

On May 27, 1997, the Jarrell Tornado , an F5 tornado that struck the city of Jarrell , Texas on May 27, 1997, experienced one of the worst storms in history. The tornado killed 27 people, making it the second most dangerous tornado of the 1990s. The trunk was a full 1.2 km wide. The track with ground contact of the trunk was 12.2 km.

As of the 2000 census , Williamson County had 249,967 people in 86,766 households and 66,983 families. The population density was 86 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.41 percent white, 5.12 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 2.64 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 7.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 17.20 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 86,766 households, 43.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 64.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers and 22.8 percent were non-families. 17.6 percent were single households and 4.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.21 people.

30.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 35.6 percent between 25 and 44, 19.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 96.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 60,642 , and the median income for a family is $ 66,208. Males had a median income of $ 43,471 versus $ 30,558 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,547. 3.4 percent of families and 4.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
