The Fayette County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in La Grange .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2,486 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lee County , Washington County , Austin County , Colorado County , Lavaca County , Gonzales County , Caldwell County, and Bastrop County .

history

Fayette County was formed on December 14, 1837 from parts of Bastrop County. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general who served in the Continental Army during the American War of Independence and later played a major role in the French Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Fayette County had 21,804 people in 8,722 households and 6,044 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.58 percent white, 7.01 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,722 households, 28.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers and 30.7 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent were single households and 16.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

23.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 22.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,526 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,156. Males had a median income of $ 29,008 versus $ 20,859 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,888. 8.1 percent of families and 11.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
