The Hockley County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Levelland .

geography

The county is located in northwest Texas, about 25 miles west of New Mexico , and covers an area of ​​2,353 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lamb County , Lubbock County , Terry County, and Cochran Counties .

history

Hockley County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County . The administrative organization was completed in February 1921. It was named after George Washington Hockley (1802-1854), who initially served as Chief of Staff under Commander-in-Chief Sam Houston during the Texas War of Independence . He fought in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 and led the artillery as a colonel. He was Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas from 1838 to 1841 .

As of the 2000 census , Hockley County had 22,716 people in 7,994 households and 6,091 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.38 percent white, 3.72 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 18.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.22 percent were descended from two or more races. 37.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,085 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,288. Males had a median income of $ 29,735 versus $ 20,671 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,022. 14.8 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
