Levelland is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Hockley County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located on US Highway 385 and Highway 140 in northwest Texas, in the southwestern part of the Texas Panhandle , is about 63 km to the west from New Mexico and has a total area of 25.7 km², without any significant water surface.

According to the 2000 census, 12,866 people lived here in 4,574 households and 3,361 families. The population density was 500.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 70.34% White, 5.36% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 20.92% other ethnic groups. About 2.21% were mixed race and 39.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,574 households, 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9% of these were married couples living together. 13.2% were single mothers and 26.5% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.17.
27.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 14.0% 18 to 24, 24.6% 25 to 44, 19.8% 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 88.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,820 USD , and the median income for a family 32,408 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,800 versus $ 20,042 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,296. 20.2% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 25.8% were children and adolescents under the age of 18, and 13.2% were 65 or older.
