The Motley County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Matador . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
geography
The county is north of the geographic center of Texas and about 50 km to the northeast from Oklahoma . It has an area of 2564 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hall County , Cottle County , Dickens County , Floyd County, and Briscoe Counties .
history
Motley County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on February 25, 1891. It was named after Junius William Mottley (1812-1836), a doctor and signatory of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas . He died in April 1936 at the Battle of San Jacinto .
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 26, 2020, the Traweek House .

As of the 2000 census , Motley County had 1,426 people in 606 households and 435 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.38 percent white, 3.51 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.14 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.89 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 606 households, 26.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 28.2 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 15.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
24.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24, 21.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 23.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.9 males.
The median income for a household in the 28,348 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 33,977 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,395 versus $ 13,333 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,584. 13.9 percent of families and 19.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
