The Val Verde County (Eng. Green Valley) is a county in the state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is Del Rio .
geography
The county is located approximately 70 km southwest of the geographic center of Texas and is bordered by Mexico in the south and southwest . It has an area of 8372 square kilometers, of which 161 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Terrell County , Crockett County , Sutton County , Edwards County , Kinney County, and the state of Coahuila , Mexico.
history
Val Verde County was formed in 1885 from parts of Crockett County, Kinney County, and Pecos County . It was named after the Battle of Valverde in the American Civil War.

According to the 2000 census , there were 44,856 people in 14,151 households and 11,320 families in Val Verde County. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.36 percent white, 1.54 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 18.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 75.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,151 households, 42.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 62.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.9 percent were single mothers and 20.0 percent were non-families. 17.5 percent were single households and 7.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.11 and the average family size was 3.55 people.
32.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 19.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 97 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,376 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,434. Males had a median income of $ 26,485 versus $ 18,039 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,096. 22.1 percent of families and 26.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
