The county is located in southeastern Texas and has an area of ​​2320 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Williamson County , Lee County , Fayette County , Gonzales County , Caldwell County, and Travis County .

history

Bastrop County was formed on March 17, 1836 as the original county and was first called "Mina County". It was given its current name on December 18, 1837. The county and the city were named after Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop (1759–1827), an early German settler who, from 1820 with Stephen F. Austin, founded an Anglo-American colony in Texas founded. In 1850 the population was 2,180 including 919 slaves. By 1860 the number of inhabitants tripled.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Bastrop State Park . 98 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 23, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Bastrop County had 57,733 people in 20,097 households and 14,771 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.24 percent white, 8.79 percent African American, 0.70 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.06 percent from the Pacific island area and 7.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 23.98 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 20,097 households, 35.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers and 26.5 percent were non-families. 21.5 percent were single households and 7.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.23 people.

28.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 31.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 104.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 43,578 , and the median income for a family was $ 49,456. Males had a median income of $ 32,843 versus $ 25,536 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,146. 8.4 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
