Bastrop is a place and seat of the county seat of Bastrop County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America .

The city is located in southeast Texas and has a total area of 18.9 km², of which 0.1 km² is water. The distance to Austin in the northwest is about 50 km, to San Antonio in the southwest about 160 km and to Houston in the east about 300 km.

According to the census in 2000 , 5,340 people lived here in 2,034 households and 1,336 families. The population density was 283.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population is composed of 72.34% White, 17.00% African American, 0.99% Asian, 0.73% Native American, and 7.02% from other races. About 1.91% are descended from two or more races and 17.75% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.
Of the 2,034 households, 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.6% of them were married couples living together. 15.3% were single mothers and 34.3% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were single households and there were people living in 12.6% who were 85 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.05.
25.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3% 18 to 24, 29.6% 25 to 44, 21.8% 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 97.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.2 men.
