The Zapata County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Zapata .

The county is located in south Texas, borders Mexico in the southwest and has an area of 2,740 square kilometers, of which 159 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Webb County , Jim Hogg County, and Starr County .
history
Zapata County was formed in 1858 from parts of Starr County and Webb County. It was named after Antonio Zapata , a rancher and officer in the Rio Grande Republic , which broke away from Mexico in 1840.

As of the 2000 census , Zapata County had 12,182 people in 3,921 households and 3,164 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.07 percent white, 0.41 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 12.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.33 percent were descended from two or more races. 84.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,921 households, 43.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 64.2 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers and 19.3 percent were non-families. 17.5 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was 3.52 people.
33.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.1 percent between 25 and 44, 18.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,635 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,722. Males had a median income of $ 26,294 versus $ 14,579 for females. The per capita income was 10,486. 35.8 percent of the population and 29.3 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
