The Van Zandt County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Canton . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

geography

The county is located about 200 km northeast of the geographic center of Texas and is about 80 km from the Oklahoma border to the north and about 100 km to the east from Arkansas . It has an area of ​​2226 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rains County , Wood County , Smith County , Henderson County , Kaufman County, and Hunt County .

history

Van Zandt County was formed in 1848 from parts of Henderson County. It was named after Isaac Van Zandt , an early settler who gained fame as a Texas prosecutor and member of Congress.

According to the 2000 census , Van Zandt County had 48,140 people in 18,195 households and 13,664 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.96 percent white, 2.94 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.65 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
