The Jim Hogg County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Hebbronville .
geography
The county is located in southern Texas, about 25 miles south and west of Mexico and about 50 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 2943 square kilometers, without any significant water surface. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Duval County , Brooks County , Starr County , Zapata County, and Webb Counties .
history
Jim Hogg County was formed in 1913 from parts of Brooks County and Duval Counties. It was named after Jim Hogg , the 21st governor of Texas .

According to the 2000 census , Jim Hogg County had 5,281 people; 1,815 households and 1,359 families were counted. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.4 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 15.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.3 percent were descended from two or more races. 90.0 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino American descent.
Of the 1,815 households, 38.5 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 55.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers and 25.1 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.43 people.
31.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 24.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.1 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,833 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,844. Males had a median income of $ 28,150 versus $ 18,750 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,185. 24.2 percent of families and 25.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
