James Stephen "Jim" Hogg (born March 24, 1851 in Rusk , Texas , † March 3, 1906 in Houston , Texas) was an American politician and from 1891 to 1895 the 20th governor of the state of Texas.

Life

Hogg was born on March 24, 1851 to Joseph Lewis Hogg and Lucanda McMath in Cherokee County . His father, who served as a major general in the Confederate Army , died in 1862 and his mother in 1863, after which he and his siblings continued to run the family's plantation . 1866 Hogg went to Tuscaloosa ( Alabama ) to study there. In 1873 he married Sally Stinson, who died in 1895. They had a daughter named Ima.

From 1887 to 1891, Hogg served as the Texas Attorney General . In 1890 he was elected Governor of Texas as a Democrat and ruled from 1891 to 1895. He devoted part of his political work to the fight against nepotism and corruption . Hogg died in Houston on March 3, 1906 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery , Austin . The Jim Hogg County was named after him.
