Andrew Jackson Hamilton (born January 28, 1815 in Huntsville , Alabama , † April 11, 1875 in Austin , Texas ) was an American politician and the 12th governor of Texas.

Hamilton was born to James and Jane (Bayless) Hamilton. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he moved to La Grange , Texas , in 1846 and opened a law firm there. He was elected Attorney General of Texas four years later and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives the following year . In 1858 he became a member of the United States House of Representatives for Texas .

During the Civil War , Hamilton sided with the Union Army and was named Military Governor of Texas by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 . After the war, US President Andrew Johnson appointed him provisional governor of Texas, which he stayed for the next 14 months. In 1865 he succeeded Fletcher Stockdale as the ordinary governor and remained in office until 1866; he was then a judge on the Supreme Court of Texas . He was succeeded by James W. Throckmorton . In 1869 he was put up again as a candidate by the Democrats , but lost the election.

After this defeat he withdrew from the public eye, continued working as a lawyer and on his farm until he died of tuberculosis in 1875 .
