On September 4, 1843 he won against Colonel James Morgan in the fight for a seat in the House of Representatives, in which he was confirmed in 1844. After the US annexation, Henderson was elected the third lieutenant governor in the state government of Texas. He held this office between 1851 and 1853. On November 23, 1853, he succeeded Peter Hansborough Bell as Governor of Texas, which he remained for the remainder of the legislature until December 21, 1853. He was succeeded as governor by Elisha M. Pease .
