List of Texas governors
The governor of Texas is the chief executive of the US state of Texas and the commander in chief of the state military forces (Texas National Guard). The governor has a right of veto over the passage of laws and a pardon. Texas' first constitution (1845) gave the governor a term of between two and four years. The constitution of 1866 extended the term of office to four years. The constitution of 1869 limited the term of office to two terms. The 1876 constitution limited the term of office to two years, but an amendment from 1972 extended it again to four years. The incumbent lives with his family in the Texas Governor's Mansion in Austin .
This list includes all of the governors of the US state of Texas and the pre-existing Republic of Texas .
