Pendleton Murrah
Pendleton Murrah ( 1826 ? In Alabama or 1827 in South Carolina , † August 4, 1865 in Monterrey , Mexico ) was the last governor of Texas during the Civil War .
Murrah graduated in 1848, moved to Alabama and in 1850 because of his tuberculosis to the drier climate of Texas , where he joined the Democratic Party. In 1855 he had the first time stand as a candidate, managed a seat in the House of Representatives but not until 1857. In 1862 he served as a quartermaster in the 14th Texas Infantry - Regiment . Due to his illness he was able to break away from the army during the Civil War in 1863 and run for governor, which was also crowned with success. On November 5, 1863, he succeeded Francis R. Lubbock as governor of Texas and remained in office until June 1865, the collapse of the Confederate States . His successor was Fletcher Stockdale in the transition period from early June to June 19, 1865 .
After the end of the Civil War, Murrah fled the Union troops to Monterrey, Mexico. The exhausting escape was too much for his body, already weakened by tuberculosis, and he died a few days after his arrival.
