Dolph Briscoe Jr. (born April 23, 1923 in Uvalde , Uvalde County , Texas , † June 27, 2010 ibid) was an American politician . He was governor of the state of Texas from 1973 to 1979 .

Early years and political advancement

Dolph Briscoe attended the University of Texas until 1943 . He then took part in the Second World War as a soldier in the US Army in Asia . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1949 and 1957 he was an MP in the Texas House of Representatives . He then ran a large ranch and soon became one of the largest ranchers in Texas. He became chairman of the ranchers' association (1960-61) and in this capacity organized a fundraising campaign that raised three million dollars. That money was then made available to federal and state agencies to fight animal disease. In 1968 he failed in the gubernatorial election of his party.

Texas Governor

In 1972, he was elected the last Texas governor to serve a two-year term. From the 1974 elections, in which he was confirmed, a four-year term was valid. Overall, Briscoe served between January 16, 1973 and January 16, 1979. During his tenure, he kept his election promise not to raise taxes. Its aim was to make the work of the government more effective without creating new administrative bodies. Briscoe was a member of the domestic Oil Commission and the National Petroleum Council . He was also on the board of directors of the National Governors Association . In 1978, Briscoe failed to win his party's gubernatorial primaries. Therefore, he had to resign from his office in early 1979.

Another résumé

After his governorship, he retired from politics and returned to his business interests and his ranch in Uvalde. There he also became chairman of the board of directors of First State Bank . Briscoe has also donated large amounts of money to government and school institutions in Texas. He had three children with his wife, Betty Jane Slaughter.
