Gregory Wayne "Greg" Abbott (born November 13, 1957 in Wichita Falls , Texas ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Republican ). He was Attorney General of the state of Texas from 2002 to 2015 and has been its governor since January 20, 2015 .

Life

Greg Abbott was born in Wichita Falls and grew up in Duncanville , where he graduated from high school. He then studied at the University of Texas at Austin , where he obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1981 .

On July 14, 1984, Abbott was hit by an oak tree felled by a storm while jogging and was critically injured. The attending doctors diagnosed, among other things, broken ribs , a collapsed lungs and bone fragments that had penetrated the spine . After an emergency operation , he was not allowed to move for a month. Abbott has been paraplegic and has to use a wheelchair since the accident .

Abbott became politically active in the Republican Party and acquired in 1984 with a degree in law at Vanderbilt University in Nashville ( Tennessee ). He then worked as a lawyer in the law firm Butler and Binion until 1992. From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a judge at the 129 District Court. In 1995 the Texas governor and later US President George W. Bush appointed him associate judge at the Supreme Court of Texas , the state's highest court of justice. He held this position until 2001. He then worked briefly as a lawyer again in the private sector until 2002 .

In 2002 Abbott ran for the Texas Attorney General . With 57 percent of the vote, he won over the mayor of Austin , Kirk Watson , who got around 41 percentage points of the vote. He was confirmed in office in the 2006 and 2010 elections. In the fall of 2013, Abbott announced that it would run for governor of Texas. He won the internal party primary of the Republicans in March 2014 with 91 percent of the vote, after the incumbent Governor Rick Perry renounced another candidacy. In the election on November 4, 2014, he was able to beat State Senator Wendy Davis with 59 percent of the vote. He took up his new office on January 20, 2015. In November 2018 he was confirmed in office with 55% of the votes against Lupe Valdez and took up his second term in January 2019. His election result was around five percentage points better than that of Senator Ted Cruz , who stood parallel to the election.

Greg Abbott has been married since 1982. He has adopted a daughter with his wife Cecilia .
