John Cornyn (* 2. February 1952 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since December 2, 2002, he has represented the state of Texas in the US Senate .

Life

Cornyn was born in Houston to Atholene Gale Danley and John Cornyn II. After finishing school, he studied at Trinity University , where he graduated in 1973. He then attended St. Mary's University School of Law , where he received his doctorate in 1977. Cornyn then served as a judge in Texas. In 1990 he was elected as a judge to the Supreme Court of Texas , where he served seven years. In 1995 he received a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia School of Law . From 1999 to 2002 he was Attorney General of Texas.

On November 5, 2002 , Cornyn was elected US Senator for Texas to succeed Phil Gramm . With 54.7 percent of the vote, he prevailed against the former mayor of Dallas , Ron Kirk . With Gramm's early resignation, Cornyn was able to take office a month earlier than usual. After the six-year first mandate, he was re-elected in the 2008 election with 54.8 percent of the vote against Rick Noriega . In the 2014 election , Cornyn received 61.6 percent against Democrat David Alameel .

In the Senate, Cornyn belongs to the conservative wing of the Republicans. The National Journal listed his 2008 voting behavior as the fourth most conservative in the Senate. During the administration of President George W. Bush , he was one of his closest allies in the Senate. After Barack Obama took office , he was elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 111th session of Congress . From January 3, 2013 he was Minority Whip of the Republican minority faction in the Senate. After the Republicans obtained a majority in this Congress Chamber in the 2014 Senate election , Cornyn became majority whip of his faction on January 3, 2015 . Cornyn was not re-elected to this position in November 2018 due to internal term limits in the Republican parliamentary group and was appointed advisor to the party leadership.

John Cornyn lives in Austin and is married to Sandy Cornyn. They have two children together. He is a member of the churches of Christ .
