Kathryn Ann "Kay" Bailey Hutchison (* 22. July 1943 in Galveston , Texas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1993 to 2013 she represented the state of Texas in the US Senate .

Hutchison was born in Galveston in 1943. She grew up in La Marque and studied at the University of Texas at Austin . There she graduated in 1967. From 1972 to 1976 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Texas . In 1982 she strove to be elected to the House of Representatives of the United States , but was defeated in the primary of her party to Steve Bartlett, who later also won the actual election . From 1990 she held the office of State Treasurer of Texas.

In 1993 she was elected to the US Senate in a special election to take over the vacant seat of Democrat Lloyd Bentsen . Bentsen had resigned to become Secretary of the Treasury . His appointed interim successor, Bob Krueger, was clearly defeated by Hutchison. She was re-elected in 1994, 2000 and 2006. In the Senate, she was a member of the Trade, Science and Transport Committee and the Approval Committee .

In 2010 she ran for governorship in her party's primary school in her home state of Texas. You missed the nomination for the November elections, however, clearly against incumbent Rick Perry , who was subsequently also confirmed by the voters. In January 2011, Hutchison announced that she would not run again in the 2012 Senate election . She said she chose this early date for the announcement to give the citizens of Texas enough time to find the right successor for them. Potential applicants were Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and State Attorney General Greg Abbott , both of whom were seen as significantly more conservative than Hutchison. On the democratic side, Bill White was traded, who lost the 2010 gubernatorial election to Rick Perry. In the election, Ted Cruz was able to prevail.

In 2015, Hutchison was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In August of the same year, a street in the Texan town of Portland was named after her.

On June 29, 2017, US President Donald Trump nominated Hutchison as the United States Ambassador to NATO . Confirmation by the US Senate took place on August 3 of the same year.
