United States Senate Committee on Appropriations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The US Senate Committee on Appropriations is a standing committee of the United States Senate responsible for providing funding. The committee is responsible for all non-statutory expenses.

With 30 members, the committee is not only the largest number of members in the Senate, but also one of the most powerful, since all government expenditures have to be constitutionally approved by a law for which the committee is responsible. It has existed since 1867, when this area of legislative work was separated from the Finance Committee .

The chairman in particular has a great deal of power that he can use both to provide advantages for his own state and to do or receive favors for other senators who want to promote their own projects. For example, while Ted Stevens of Alaska served as chairman of the committee for six years, the state received $ 12,000 in public funding per inhabitant, double the national average.
