There he attended the Punahou School , which Barack Obama also visited at times. To study philosophy , Schatz went to Pomona College in Claremont , California. He spent a semester in Kenya . Schatz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.

Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii, Schatz was CEO of the Makiki Community Library , the Center for a Sustainable Future, and Helping Hands Hawaii , a charity in Oahu .

He is married to Linda Kwok Kai Yun Schatz. Together they have son Tyler and daughter Mia.

Political career

In 1998, Schatz was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 2000, 2002 and 2004. In 2006 he left the House of Representatives and instead ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives to succeed Ed Case . In the Democratic primary election, however, he was unable to prevail against Mazie Hirono , who later also won the main election.

After Barack Obama announced his presidential candidacy in 2008 , Schatz was one of his first supporters, and Obama named him as campaign spokesman in Hawaii.

In April 2008, Schatz ran for President of the Hawaii Democratic Party. He was elected at the party conference in May 2008. Under his leadership, the Democratic Party of Hawaii went into the 2008 presidential election. Obama won Hawaii with 73% of the vote, the highest percentage of Obama's vote in any state.

As the running mate of Neil Abercrombie , Schatz was a candidate for the 2010 gubernatorial election in Hawaii. The duo was able to prevail with 57.8% of the vote.

After the death of longtime Senator Daniel Inouye in December 2012, it was the job of the governor, i.e. the Abercrombies, to appoint a successor until the 2014 by-election under the laws of the state of Hawaii. Inouye himself had expressed in a letter to Abercrombie shortly before his death the wish to appoint Colleen Hanabusa , representative of the 1st congressional district of Hawaii in the US House of Representatives, as his successor. Abercrombie did not comply with Inouye's request and appointed his lieutenant governor as his successor on December 26, 2012. Schatz was sworn in by US Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, DC on December 27, and initially held the office until the November 2014 by-election. In the by-election on November 4, 2014, Schatz was able to prevail against Republican Campbell Cavasso with 69.8% of the vote. This enabled Schatz to bring Inouye's term of office to an end. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also represent his state in the US Senate for the next six years. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.
