Neil Abercrombie (born June 26, 1938 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of Hawaii from 1986 to 1987 and from 1991 to 2010 . From December 2010 to December 2014 he was the governor of Hawaii.

Live and act

Abercrombie graduated from Union College in Schenectady , New York with a bachelor's degree. He received his master’s degree from the University of Hawaii in Manoa in 1964 , where he also received his doctorate in philosophy in 1974 . In 1970, he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for election to the United States Senate ; he was instead elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1974, to which he was a member until 1978. He then moved to the Hawaii Senate , where he remained until 1986. In a by-election, made necessary by the resignation of the deputy Cecil Heftel in September 1986, he was elected to the 99th  Congress . In the election to the 100th Congress a few months later, he could not confirm his mandate and was defeated by the Republican Pat Saiki . After a few years in the city council of Honolulu ( City Council ) he was able to prevail in 1990 in the election for the 102nd Congress. Since the 102nd Congress met in early 1991, he was a member of the House of Representatives without interruption until his resignation on February 26, 2010.

In March 2009, Abercrombie announced that it would run for the governor of Hawaii in the 2010 election . Incumbent Linda Lingle was constitutionally banned from running. He resigned from the US House of Representatives in early 2010 to focus on the election campaign. In September of the same year he prevailed against Mufi Hannemann in the Democratic primary election and was his party's candidate in the main election in November. There he met the Republican Lieutenant Governor James Aiona , whom he clearly defeated with a share of 58 percent of the vote. Abercrombie replaced Linda Lingle on December 6, 2010 in the governorship. After taking office, he was the oldest incumbent governor in the United States until January 3, 2011, at the age of 72. After this short period of time, he was replaced by Jerry Brown , who was two and a half months older , after he had been sworn in as governor of California . Brian Schatz served as his lieutenant governor until the end of 2012 , and Shan Tsutsui since then .

In 2014 Abercrombie ran for his party's re-nomination to be elected for a second term. After his popularity had fallen steadily recently, he lost in the Democratic Primary very clearly with 32:67 percent of the votes against the State Senator David Ige , whose Republican opponent in the election on November 4th was again James Aiona. His term of office ended on December 1, 2014 with the inauguration of Ige.
