Mazie Keiko Hirono (born November 3, 1947 in Date County , Fukushima Prefecture , Japan as Keiko Hirono ( Japanese 広 野 慶 子 , Hirono Keiko )) is an American politician . From 2007 to 2013 she represented the second constituency of the state of Hawaii in the US House of Representatives . She has been a member of the United States Senate for Hawaii since January 3, 2013 .

Early years and political advancement

In 1955, Mazie Hirono came to the United States with her mother, who was escaping a failed marriage. She grew up in Honolulu , where she also attended public schools. Until 1970 she studied psychology at the University of Hawaii . This was followed by a law degree at Georgetown University in Washington, DC From 1978 she worked in Honolulu as a lawyer.

As a member of the Democratic Party , she was a member of the House of Representatives of Hawaii from 1981 to 1994 and the deputy to the Hawaiian Governor Ben Cayetano from 1994 to 2002 . Before the 2002 gubernatorial elections, she narrowly prevailed in her party's primary elections against Ed Case , who was then elected to the US House of Representatives. She lost the actual gubernatorial election of 2002 against Republican competitor Linda Lingle with 47 to 52 percent of the vote.

Congresswoman and Senator

In the 2006 congressional election , Mazie Hirono was elected to succeed Ed Case as MP for Hawaii Second Constituency in the United States House of Representatives - with 61 percent of the vote; their Republican opponent Bob Hogue came up with 39 percent. She was re-elected in 2008 and 2010. In Congress, she was a member of the Education and Labor Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. On January 3, 2013, she left the House of Representatives.

In the 2012 election , she did not resume her previous seat, but was elected to the United States Senate for Hawaii , where she succeeded the no longer candidate Daniel Akaka on January 3, 2013 . With the Japanese American Hirono, a Buddhist has entered the Senate for the first time . There she is represented as a member of the Armed Forces Committee , the Justice Committee and the Veterans Committee. She won her re-election in 2018 with 71 to 29 percent of the vote against Republican Ron Curtis and will take up her second six-year mandate on January 3, 2019.
