Linda Lingle (* 4. June 1953 as Linda Cutter in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). From December 2, 2002 to December 6, 2010, she served as the sixth governor of the state of Hawaii .

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Lingle moved with her family to southern California at the age of twelve and graduated from Birmingham High School in Lake Balboa , a district of Los Angeles . In 1975 she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from California State University at Northridge . A short time later, she followed her father to Hawaii, where she first worked in Honolulu and later on Moloka'i brought out her own newspaper, the Molokai Free Press . She was Mayor of Maui County from 1990 to 1998 .

In 1998 she ran for governor for the first time, but was narrowly defeated by the democratic incumbent Ben Cayetano . Then she was until 2002 the Republican Party at the state level. This year she was able to prevail against Lieutenant Governor Mazie Hirono in her second candidacy with 51.6 percent of the vote . In 2006 she succeeded in re-election with a clear win against Randy Iwase .

There were some special features associated with Lingle's first choice. She was the first female governor of Hawaii, the first Jewish female governor, the first without children, and the first to be divorced twice. After eight years in office, she was unable to run again; their lieutenant governor James Aiona , who ran for her successor, lost to the Democrat Neil Abercrombie , who replaced Linda Lingle on December 6, 2010.

Lingle applied in November 2012 to no avail for a mandate from Hawaii in the US Senate. Although she won the Republican primary , she was defeated by her Democratic opponent Mazie Hirono in a clear decision.

In January 2015 she returned to a political position after the Governor of Illinois Bruce Rauner appointed her a senior advisor in his government. The Rauner should advise on all political issues.
