Benjamin Jerome "Ben" Cayetano (born November 14, 1939 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American politician . He was the fifth governor of the US state of Hawaii from 1994 to 2002 .

Career

Ben Cayetano was born in Honolulu in 1939. He received his BA in Politics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1968 and his Law Degree from Loyola Law School in 1971 . He held public office for more than two decades, for which he was elected eight times. Cayetano was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives, where he remained from 1975 to 1978, and then to the Hawaii Senate , of which he was a member from 1979 to 1986. He then held the post of Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii between 1986 and 1994 . He was then elected to the office of governor of Hawaii, where he prevailed against the independent candidate Frank Fasi and the Republican Pat Saiki . After a re-election in 1998, he held office from December 2, 1994 to December 2, 2002. He was also an early chairman of the Western Governors' Association.
